Liposuction: Sculpting Your Silhouette for a More Confident You

Do you struggle with stubborn pockets of fat that resist even your most dedicated diet and exercise routine? Liposuction, a body contouring procedure, can be a powerful tool to help you achieve your desired silhouette and boost your confidence. Here at Dr. Matt Erdmann’s plastic surgery practice at the Spire Washington Hospital, we offer advanced liposuction techniques using the Bodyjet to help you sculpt your dream body.

The world of liposuction is complex so it is important to explore its benefits, the ideal candidate, the different techniques available, and what to expect during the procedure and recovery process.

Benefits of Bodyjet Liposuction:

Liposuction offers several advantages for individuals seeking a more refined body shape:

    • Targeted Fat Removal: Liposuction removes unwanted fat deposits from specific areas of the body, including the abdomen, flanks, thighs, arms, and buttocks. This can lead to a more sculpted and proportionate figure.
    • Improved Body Confidence: When you see a visible improvement in your body shape, it can significantly boost your self-esteem and confidence. Liposuction can help you feel more comfortable and empowered in your clothes.
    • Enhanced Body Contours: By removing localised pockets of fat, liposuction can create smoother and more defined body contours. This can be particularly beneficial for those with areas resistant to diet and exercise.
    • Long-lasting Results: While liposuction doesn’t prevent future weight gain, it removes fat cells permanently. As long as you maintain a healthy lifestyle with a balanced diet and regular exercise, the results of liposuction can be long-lasting.

Who is a Good Candidate for Liposuction?

Liposuction is not a weight loss solution. Ideal candidates for the procedure are individuals who:

  • Maintain a healthy weight within a normal Body Mass Index (BMI) range.
  • Have good skin elasticity, allowing the skin to retract and conform to the new body contours after fat removal.
  • Are committed to maintaining a healthy lifestyle after surgery.
  • Have specific areas of stubborn fat deposits unresponsive to diet and exercise.

Types of Liposuction Techniques:

Mr. Erdmann utilises various liposuction techniques to achieve optimal results for each patient. Here are some commonly used methods:

  • Bodyjet Liposuction: This technique involves injecting a tumescent solution (lidocaine, saline, and epinephrine) into the treatment area to numb the area, minimise blood loss, and facilitate fat removal.
  • Tulip liposuction: This technique is used for small areas of fat
  • Coleman technique: used for fat aspiration, then filtered and injected into the face for rejuvenation.

What to Expect During Blepharoplasty:

Mr. Erdmann will perform a thorough consultation to discuss your goals and expectations for blepharoplasty. During this consultation, he will:

  • Review your medical history and perform a physical examination of your eyelids.
  • Discuss the different types of blepharoplasty (upper eyelid, lower eyelid, or both) and which may be most suitable for you.
  • In some younger patients a trans-conjunctival approach to remove excess lower eyelid fat may be appropriate with a hidden scar
  • Explain the risks and potential complications associated with the procedure.
  • Provide detailed information about the recovery process.

Blepharoplasty is typically performed as an daycase procedure under local anaesthesia but can be done under general anaesthesia especially if all 4 lids require improving. Depending on the extent of the surgery, it can take one to two hours to complete.

What to Expect During Liposuction:

Liposuction can be performed as an outpatient procedure or may require an overnight stay depending on the extent of the surgery. The following is a general overview of the process:

  • Consultation: Mr. Erdmann will discuss your goals, medical history, and perform a physical examination to determine if liposuction is right for you. He will also explain the specific technique recommended for your case and answer any questions you may have.
  • The Procedure: Liposuction is typically performed under general anaesthesia or local anaesthesia with sedation. A small incision is made in the treatment area, and a cannula (thin tube) is inserted to suction out the targeted fat cells.
  • Recovery: After surgery, you can expect some swelling, bruising, and discomfort. You will likely wear a compression garment for several weeks to help reduce swelling and promote healing. Most patients can return to work within a few days, but strenuous activity should be avoided for several weeks.
  • The eventual outcome may take 3 months to become apparent as the fat cells shrink over time.
